Citizens have gathered across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the area

Civilian Reaction

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the captives to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers said.
