On the eve of his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach took over on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an cup win not long after. But, that first major trophy remains his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” Arteta responded when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal met immediately following his appointment was announced.

League Position and Pressure

Arteta continued, commending the strong backing from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

The team heads into the upcoming game dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to keep him out for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
