Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unneeded presents might be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The diverse haul could include items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the intention is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to non-profit organizations.

The items are currently locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The question raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative represents a distinct method to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
