The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Explains Its Application of Machine Learning for Next Project
The developer behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its new project, generating immense anticipation within the industry. However, subsequent remarks from the company's co-founder have introduced nuance to the discussion, addressing the developer's approach toward AI tools.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a new clarification, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is using AI technology for specific supporting tasks. These encompass fleshing out PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage artistic references, and writing draft text.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the end assets in the game will be created entirely by human writers. "Our team is writing everything manually," he stated.
Larian is constantly growing our pool of writers and are actively assembling narrative groups.
As visual development is being explicitly called out — we currently have twenty-three concept artists and have positions available for more creatives.
Each initiative we do is supplementary and designed to having people spend more time on the creative process.
Every AI system used well is a boost to a developer's routine, not a substitute for their talent.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of AI usage originally generated concern among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued further clarification on social media.
"We use these tools to explore references, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he explained. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then substitute with original concept art."
He continued, "Larian brings on creatives for their unique talent, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously detailed the team's focused strategy to AI and ML, defining its use into key areas:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes refining animations, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adapting animations for different models.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of mechanics to validate concepts ahead of full implementation.
- Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how machine learning could eventually create innovative player agency, particularly in managing player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.
He clearly noted that core creative disciplines — including music composition — are are absolutely not areas where the studio is reducing human input. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these precise positions.
"Larian is not releasing a game with any AI components, nor looking at reducing staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
